Teens who spend time in Downtown Pittsburgh say they need a welcoming neighborhood, more safe spaces
90.5 WESA | By Sarah Schneider Published January 26, 2023 at 5:35 AM EST Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey and City Council President Theresa Kail-Smith plan to establish an advisory committee that will be tasked with opening centers as part of Gainey’s “Plan for Peace.”
Garland, 20, joined Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts school (CAPA) in eighth grade and received classical training. Since then, he’s been involved in numerous companies, programs, and camps, the most notable of which is his recent admission to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He’s making the move during his junior year at University of Southern California's Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and the middle of Ailey’s season.
PITTSBURGH — Kindergarten students at Pittsburgh Minadeo PreK-5 in Squirrel Hill started cruising in physical education class on Monday, thanks to a surprise delivery of 24 bicycles. Engineering company HDR and All Kids Bike provided the school with the bikes, helmets, and more, as part of an initiative that seeks to teach kids how to ride at school.
ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Pittsburgh -5 is a partial STEAM Magnet program on the edge of Bloomfield and Lawrenceville and housed in a Nationally Historic Landmark Building. Both our neighborhood and magnet students receive the same STEAM programming through their core instruction and a dedicated STEAM Class. At its core, STEAM education combines several disciplines into learning to help students gain a better understanding of how science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics relate in the real world. Additionally, this program's unique approach promotes creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication to help all types of learners succeed.
At Pittsburgh , our students participate in our 3Rs School-Wide Positive Behavior Plan. Each student is expected to follow the 3Rs throughout the school day - Ready and Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. Students earn Paw Tickets for showing the 3Rs, that they can use to shop at our school store. offers an Energy Committee (grades 3-5), Student Envoys (grades 3-5), and a Junior Chapter of The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE Jr.) sponsored by The Links Inc. (grades 3-5). We have partnerships with Mercy Behavioral Health, Carnegie Science Center, The Frick Environmental Center, Carnegie Library, and the Neighborhood Learning Alliance.
