Pittsburgh Public Schools Boost Summer School Programs
PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh school officials say they usually have some student learning loss over the summer. This year they're also worried about COVID-19 learning loss with students out of the classroom since mid-March.
"We are very concerned and aware of potential learning loss that our students are going to have as a result of COVID-19," according to the district's Chief of School Performance David May-Stein. "As a result of that we started to plan different learning opportunities this summer, not only to prevent summer learning loss but to recoup COVID learning loss as it may be experienced."
The district will expand enrollment for its Summer Dreamers Academy for grades K-5. It will focus on core subjects of reading and math. A new Learn and Earn program is for 8th and 9th graders. Students age 14 and above can also earn money as part of the city's summer youth employment program.
Brain Booster is for 10th and 11th grades. This is a non-credit program again in reading and math. There is also a graded program for Juniors and Seniors who need credits for graduation next year. The 2 week program starts June 17. The 4 week session runs all of July.
May-Stein says all other programs start June 29 for students and run through August 4. Classes start at 8:45 am and run until 12:45 pm Monday through Friday. "All of out programs this summer will be virtual," said May-Stein. The district is working toward a one to one environment with every student having a take home device this summer.
