PPG Foundation Announces $1 Million Gift to The Pittsburgh Promise During “Preferred College Partners” Event as Pittsburgh Public High School Students are Recruited, Apply for Scholarships
The PPG Foundation announced a $1 million gift to The Pittsburgh Promise at The Pittsburgh Promise’s Preferred College Partners Opportunity Fair where admissions officers from 35 institutions of higher learning in Pennsylvania actively recruited students, offered admission, and provided on-the-spot scholarships. The Preferred College Partners are post-secondary institutions that make specific commitments of grants and other support, over and above packaging financial aid to ensure the success of Promise scholars.
Hundreds of students gathered at the Energy Innovation Center complex in Pittsburgh’s Hill District to meet with representatives from trade, 2-year, and 4-year post-secondary schools to learn about admission opportunities from The Promise’s Preferred College Partners. Officials from The Pittsburgh Promise, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and the PPG Foundation also attended the event and offered words of encouragement to the high school students as they prepare for post-secondary education success.
A named scholarship will be established for PPG and five graduating seniors who will be selected annually and named as the “PPG Scholars of The Pittsburgh Promise.” Students will have the opportunity to build mentoring and professional relationships with company leaders as they pursue their degrees.
Malesia Dunn, PPG’s executive director of the PPG Foundation and global corporate social responsibility, shared the news with hundreds of students and college admissions representatives who were in attendance.
Dunn said, "At PPG, we believe education is a powerful way to catalyze positive impacts in our communities and enable possibilities and progress through learning, curiosity and discovery. We’re investing in The Pittsburgh Promise and support its mission because we know first-hand the importance of education in creating a diverse, skilled STEM workforce and a strong, sustainable Pittsburgh community. Like PPG, The Pittsburgh Promise prioritizes equity and inclusivity to expand opportunities for students to explore new horizons in science-related fields that will shape our region for generations to come."
“The Pittsburgh Promise has created opportunities for all students to access higher education with financial support,” said Dr. Wayne N. Walters, Interim Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools. “I am thrilled that they have partnered with 35 colleges and universities to go the extra mile on behalf of our students by driving support services to them as well as reducing the cost of room and board on campus. I am thankful to the funding community, including the PPG Foundation, for their generous support,” added Dr. Walters.
Pittsburgh Promise Executive Director Saleem Ghubril said, “We are proud to have the PPG Foundation as our newest partner in expanding opportunities for economic mobility through education for our city’s students. Their support demonstrates a deep commitment to our region, the future of our workforce, and educational equity for all of our young people. We are hopeful that every company, small and large, will join PPG and other donors and invest in the promise of Pittsburgh’s future.”
