Karen Arnold hired as new City League athletic director
Karen Arnold is a former City League athlete. Her husband is a former City League coach, and their son is a former City athlete.
So Karen Arnold has seen sports in the City up close and personal. But now she’ll be running City League athletics.
Arnold has been named the director of interscholastic athletics for Pittsburgh Public Schools, which is another name for City League athletic director. Arnold will take over for Mike Gavlik, the City’s AD for 14 years before leaving in September to become AD at Chartiers Valley High School in the WPIAL.
Arnold will start her new job in the near future, as soon as someone is hired to take over for her as principal at Fulton, a pre-K-5 school in Pittsburgh Public Schools. Arnold is in her sixth year as principal.
Arnold has experience in the athletic administration world as the former athletic manager (AD) at Langley High School in the City League from 2001-12. Langley is now closed. Arnold actually applied for the City League AD job when Gavlik was hired, but didn’t get it.
“This is really my dream job,” said Arnold, 45, a resident of Brookline. “To be able to combine administration with athletics, and just seeing kids grow athletically and outside the classroom, is something I value a great deal.”
