PPS creates team to review, consider expanding K-2 suspension ban after first full year
The Pittsburgh Public Schools announced Friday it would form a review team to evaluate and consider an expansion of the district’s K-2 suspension ban for nonviolent infractions.
The creation of the team, which will consist of local educators, professionals, advocates and parents, comes at the end of the first full year that the district placed a moratorium on K-2 suspensions for nonviolent offenses.
Although it was the first full year of the moratorium, the district stopped calculating suspensions in March because of the COVID-19 shutdown.
The Pittsburgh Public Schools said it had an overall suspension rate of 10.2% up to March during the 2019-20 school year. The district had an 8.6% suspension rate up to March in the 2018-19 school year, and a 8.1% rate up to March in the 2017-18 school year.
