    Superintendent Wayne N. Walters’ Black Men Read to Close Black History Month Celebrations in Pittsburgh Public Schools

    For the last day of Black History Month, Superintendent Wayne N. Walters, Ed.D., will be joined by Black men from across the region for Black Men Read. During PPS Literacy Week, Black Men Read aims to encourage a love of reading and promote literacy among students while countering negative narratives about Black men.

    Next Pittsburgh | Ann Belser| November 3, 2022 | Walters started with PPS as a music teacher at King Elementary after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1990. For more than 30 years, he has worked his way up through the system. He was the assistant principal of Northview Heights Elementary School in 1999, principal of Frick International Studies Academy 6-8 in 2000, and the first principal of the new Pittsburgh Barack Obama Academy of International Studies in 2008.

He talked to Channel 11 about everything from budget issues, district staffing shortages and how the pandemic affected student learning. “Change is a process. It’s not an event. So, we did not get here in five minutes and it’s going to take longer than five minutes to remedy.” Dr. Walters says he plans to use his time working in the district as a teacher and principal to address violence like student fights and guns found near school property. But he tells Channel 11 he needs the community’s help.
