The afternoon of Feb. 18 turned into a late night for a few members of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. In a pre-game ceremony, Jaromir Jagr’s jersey was hoisted to the rafters of PPG Paints Arena, becoming more retired than the now-52-year-old man who wore it. But after all of the public celebrations, there was a private one.

Pittsburgh Public School students learn about nutrition during National School Breakfast Week
It’s National School Breakfast Week, and at Pittsburgh Minadeo, students are getting a lesson in nutrition. On Tuesday the pre-5 and kindergarten students taste-tested a new breakfast fruit recipe prepared by food service employees at the school. It’s made of canned and fresh pears, topped with homemade granola and whipped cream, all created by Pittsburgh Public School’s Chef Missy. It’s called Chef Missy’s Pear Bake.

A Celebration of Brilliance: Dr. Mary Lee Brady-Atkins inducted into Westinghouse High School Wall of Fame
Thursday, February 8, 2024, was a humongous day in the City of Pittsburgh, at Westinghouse High School, and in the life of Dr. Mary Lee Brady-Atkins. The oldest living descendant of Sally Hemings, who was born on May 11, 1928, and at age 95, was recognized for her “extraordinary works” and “unforgettable life” during a ceremony at her alma mater, Westinghouse.

PITTSBURGH — Politicians, doctors, scientists and leaders gathered at PPS Fulton PreK-5 to honor Black History Month and inspire the next generation of changemakers. Usually, Black History Month honors the contributions of African Americans past, but on Friday at PPS Fulton, elementary students didn’t just recognize the past, they were able to envision themselves as the future. “Seeing people that look like them that are doing amazing things,” said Sonia Brown, a teacher at PPS Fulton.
