“Take A Child to School Day is really important for us because it encourages fathers and adult role models and figures to really come and be a part of bringing their children to school,” Superintendent Wayne Walters said Thursday. “All of it matters. All of it matters, all of our community coming together to support our children matters.”

A new documentary will explore the history of Brashear High School opening during desegregation
Brashear’s history – and Mr. Khorey’s essential role – will soon be encapsulated in a documentary created by local filmmaker Patrick Stanny, co-founder and co-owner of the production company malhari.media. The documentary, which will be completed by the end of next year, will explore the complexities of desegregating schools while examining the challenges still facing the public school system today.

Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education, recently paid a visit to Pittsburgh Lincoln PreK-5. During his visit, he engaged with the 1st-grade students by reading a book to them. This visit was part of Superintendent Wayne N. Walters' Black Men Read initiative.

Nina Giordano Unitas makes joy the cornerstone of Pittsburgh Public Schools’ arts education
Nina Giordano Unitas has been senior program officer for arts education at Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) since March 2022. Her 24 years of experience as a public school teacher and administrator, along with a master’s degree in Public Management, Educational Leadership from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, have given her a wide-ranging grasp of contemporary teaching trends and theories.

Equity recognizes students’ experiences are different and require diverse supports, resources, and funding to ensure that all students experience successful academic growth and achievement. To ensure that Pittsburgh Public Schools students, staff and school communities share, understand and practice common vocabulary to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations, the Office of Equity has created the Equity Glossary of Terms. The carefully researched list, while not exhaustive, was formed by the Office of Equity to help individuals engage in meaningful conversations and actions towards and equitable education for all.

Take a Child to School Day
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 ALL PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS Pittsburgh Public Schools is inviting fathers, grandfathers, cousins, uncles, brothers, community leaders, and positive male role models to welcome students to school on Take A Child to School Day. On this day, men are encouraged to drop off their PPS students or sign up to greet children during morning arrival.

Due to severely high temperatures, all outdoor practices and competitions are cancelled for Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6, 2023. All competitions will be rescheduled. Air-conditioned schools or schools with access to other PPS air-conditioned facilities are permitted to hold practices indoors.
