Common Core CurriculumIn today’s highly competitive global society, we as educators are constantly striving to help our students succeed. The new Common Core State Standards will support our efforts, providing a fundamental shift that makes college and career readiness the number one focus of K-12 education.
Common Core State Standards Development
- The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative is a state led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGS Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).
- The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators and content experts in English language Arts/Literacy and mathematics to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for the rigors of college and the workforce.
- Forty-eight states and territories have adopted the Common Core State Standards. Pennsylvania is one of them.
Principles of the Common Core State Standards
- Students, regardless of circumstance, achieve at high levels.
- Students must be career and college ready.
- Students will be able to move from school to school across the nation and have continuity of curriculum.
- Curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades.
- Students read increasingly complex texts with increasing independence.

These parent roadmaps for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.
