Strategic Theme #1 of the District 2017-2023 Strategic Plan: Expect Great Things is to create a positive and supportive school culture. One of the initiatives to get us there is our tiered and phased approach to community schools. Nationally, community schools are recognized as “smart schools” that improve students’ learning by combining traditional approaches with community-based resources to support students’ academic success.

To help schools meet the needs of students that go beyond the classroom, the District has increased nursing support on every campus, put positive behavior supports in every school, expanded restorative practices, improved library services, and added four regional attendance assistants.

We also designated five community schools in Round One of our phased approach:

    Pittsburgh Arsenal 6-8

    Pittsburgh Faison K-5

    Pittsburgh Langley K-8

    Pittsburgh Lincoln PreK-5

    Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy 6-12

Community School Leaders
  • These designated Community Schools have a person on site to enlist and coordinate community organizations to provide intensive support, based on the unique needs of each school community. This integrated system of engagement values and includes everyone - teachers, school leaders, community partners, students and their families to provide comprehensive support for all students, and a base for transformative parental engagement on behalf of children and schools.
