Mission
The mission of the Pittsburgh Public Schools’ team of professional Librarians is to provide instruction in information and digital literacy within a safe and welcoming environment where students, their families, and staff may access materials that promote a love of reading and lifelong learning. The school library in each school is a workshop in which our learning community researches, collaborates and creates. Each Librarian is the information specialist who curates a collection that supports the school’s mission and the needs and interests of its students. The ultimate goal for Librarians is the promotion of skills to ensure that our students are prepared as 21st century learners and as users and creators of information.
Purpose of School Libraries
PPS Librarians embrace the purpose of school libraries as delineated by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL):
“The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) supports the position that an effective school library program plays a crucial role in preparing students for informed living in an information-rich society. The school library program provides learning opportunities that enable students to become efficient, effective, and creative users of information. Further, the school library program encourages students to examine the authority of authors and the bias of sponsors; to assess the importance of currency of information to the topic at hand; to determine the scope and relevance of information to meet their needs; and to create and share new ideas, resources, products, and information. This instruction occurs best in the context of the school curriculum where students are guided by a standard of excellence set by their classroom teachers in collaboration with the school librarian.”
