Whether a student passes Algebra 1 by the end of 9th grade is an important indicator of a student's likelihood to graduate high school on time. It is also an important core course that acts as a foundation for more advanced math and science scholarship. 

The dashboard below shows the percent of students who completed Algebra 1 by the end of their first 9th grade year. The dashboard provides a view into the Algebra 1 9th Grade Pass Rate for the district, schools, and student groups. Drop-down filters at the top of the dashboard allow you to see the metrics for the group selected. 

PPS expects Advanced Placement (AP) coursework at our schools to be of the highest quality. AP students should receive instruction that sets them up for success on the respective exams. PPS also expects AP coursework and exams to be offered equitably across all groups so that all students have access to higher-level courses.

The dashboard below shows the percent of students who took and passed an AP course and also passed an AP exam. The dashboard provides a view into the AP Pass Rate for the district, schools, and student groups. Drop-down filters at the top of the dashboard allow you to see the metrics for the group selected.

Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) recognizes that instruction in core academic content areas is an important part of a rigorous education. As such, PPS monitors its secondary students’ completion of courses in core content areas. The four core content areas are English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social Studies.

The dashboard below shows the number and percent of 9^th through 12^th grade students who enrolled in at least one course in each of the four core course areas for a given year. In other words, it displays the number and percent of students in grades 9 through 12 who took one or more ELA courses, one or more Math courses, one or more Social Studies courses, and one or more Science courses in the year displayed. 

*Please note: Students who attended schools that serve exclusively special-needs populations (Pioneer and Conroy) are not included because of the distinct educational experiences they provide.

**Please note: Students who attended Science and Technology Academy are not included in the data because of the unique scheduling structure offered at the school, which allows students to schedule courses in a manner different from most secondary schools. 

An Industry Credential shows that the student has taken the appropriate end of course exams and demonstrated competency in this area. Students with Industry Credentials have demonstrated they are prepared for career-related work after high school or additional post-secondary education/training.

The dashboard below provides data on 12^th grade students who have earned an Industry Recognized Credential throughout the course of their CTE programming. It is broken out into 2 pages, the first at the district level and a second page that shows information on students who have earned a credential by school of enrollment.

The Pittsburgh Promise provides an important opportunity for Pittsburgh families to access money to help pay for students to attend college. In order to receive scholarships, students must maintain an attendance rate of 90% or higher and a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Recognizing both the special opportunity to receive Promise scholarships and the importance of those indicators, PPS monitors students' Promise eligibility. 

The dashboard below provides percentages of currently enrolled students who are on track to receive a Promise scholarship. The dashboard provides a view into the Promise Eligibility Rate for the district, schools, and student groups. Drop-down filters at the top of the dashboard allow you to see the metrics for the group selected. 

PVAAS (Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System) measures student growth from one year to the next, based on state assessment performance. In this sense, growth for one student compares a student’s performance on an assessment to their performance on earlier assessments. The state assessments used in PVAAS analysis include the PSSA and the Keystone exams. The Pennsylvania Department of Education works with SAS, an analytics firm, to develop and calculate PVAAS measures and metrics.

“PVAAS is a statistical analysis of state assessment data and provides districts and their schools with growth data to add to achievement data. This lens of measuring student learning provides educators with valuable information to ensure they are meeting the academic needs of their students.

To help you understand PVAAS analysis, think of academic growth in terms of a child's physical growth and the growth charts utilized by a child's physician. Growth charts are an important tool for monitoring a child's development, but they are just one of the indicators used by the physician to ensure a child is growing at the minimum expected level and on the trajectory to grow as expected. A physician would not use a growth chart in isolation to diagnose a child; however, the growth chart would provide valuable information that may warrant further exploration.”

The dashboard below displays the growth category for each PSSA and Keystone exam subject for PPS schools, as well as a growth category for the district as a whole.

How students are disciplined in schools has real impacts on how equitably students are treated, a school's culture, and access to instructional time. As such, PPS pays close attention to disciplinary trends. One such trend is the rate of out-of-school suspensions across time, schools, and student subgroups. 

Suspension rate is defined as the number of students who have received one or more suspension divided by the number of students enrolled at any time during the school year. The dashboard below displays the Suspension Rate for the district, schools, and student subgroups. Drop-down filters at the top of the dashboard allow you to see the metrics for the group selected. 

The Teaching and Learning Conditions (TLC) Survey provides district educators with an opportunity to anonymously share their perceptions on the teaching and learning environments within their school. Since 2010, Pittsburgh Public Schools has worked with the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers to encourage high levels of participation to ensure that results are truly reflective of educator perceptions. Thanks to this collaboration and the continued efforts of our educators, the TLC Survey has consistently achieved 90% participation or higher, the strongest participation in the country.

This dashboard provides data on a few of the responses to the TLC Survey focused on safety and support. Included in the dashboard are three questions about support and one question about safety.  The dashboard summarizes the answers to each of those four questions. The dashboard also includes a metric that summarizes responses across all four questions in one chart.

The Pittsburgh Promise provides an important opportunity for Pittsburgh families to access money to help pay for students to attend college. PPS wants to see students take advantage of this opportunity. In collaboration with the Pittsburgh Promise, PPS monitors how many graduates qualify for the promise.
