Black Men Read

Superintendent Wayne N. Walters, EdD, is calling on Black Men to spread the love by showing Pittsburgh that Black Men Read.
Maya Angelou once said, “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.”
On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Black male leaders will bring words to life for our youngest readers as part of Black Men Read. Taking place at 35 schools across the District, Black Men Read aims to encourage a love of reading and promote literacy for our students while also countering negative narratives related to Black men. As part of Black Men Read, leaders from across the city will read to students in grades K-2, demonstrating that Black men care about the outcomes and experiences of Pittsburgh’s children.
Black men are encouraged to confirm their availability on the survey below.
Following confirmation, participants will receive additional details related to their school assignment and expectations.
