Empowering the Next Generation of Scientists

In Pittsburgh Public Schools, we believe that science is not just a subject to be studied, but a way of understanding and interacting with the world. Guided by the Pennsylvania STEELS standards (Science, Technology, Engineering, Environmental Literacy, and Sustainability), our curriculum shifts the focus from learning about science to figuring out how the world works. Our approach is phenomena-based and inquiry-driven, meaning students begin their journey by investigating real-world situations—like why a local ecosystem is changing or how the internet works—to spark natural curiosity.

By engaging in multi-dimensional learning, our students don't just read about scientific concepts; they act as scientists and engineers. They use the Eight Science and Engineering Practices to investigate, model, and design solutions to complex problems. This investigative approach ensures that every student—from kindergarten through graduation—develops the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills necessary to become a scientifically literate citizen. Whether they are entering the workforce or pursuing higher education, our students are prepared to navigate the interplay between science, technology, and society with confidence and ethical responsibility.

Key Pillars of Our Science Program

  • Phenomena-Centered: Lessons start with observable events that encourage students to ask "why?" and "how?"

  • Integrated Inquiry: We weave together biological, physical, and Earth sciences with engineering and environmental literacy.

  • Hands-On: Students spend more time "doing" science—designing experiments, building models, and analyzing real data.

  • Equitable Access: We are committed to providing every student with high-quality instructional materials and investigative opportunities that reflect the diversity of our world.
