Algebra 1
Algebra 1 Keystone Exam as a Graduation Requirement
In Pennsylvania, passing the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam—or meeting an equivalent standard—is a graduation requirement for students in the graduating class of 2023 and beyond.
However, students have multiple pathways to satisfy this requirement. While many students meet the criteria by achieving a score of Proficient or Advanced on the exam, the state has introduced several alternatives for those who do not.
The Five Graduation Pathways
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) outlines the following routes to graduation:
- Keystone Proficiency Pathway
- Keystone Composite Pathway
- CTE (Career & Technical Education) Pathway
- Alternate Assessment Pathway
- Evidence-Based Pathway
For students within Pittsburgh Public Schools, the district monitors these pathways closely. If a student does not pass the Algebra 1 Keystone on the first attempt, they are typically offered supplemental instruction or remediation before being given the opportunity to retake the exam or pursue one of the alternate pathways mentioned above.
