Dr. Wayne N. Walters – Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools On July 21, 2022, the Pittsburgh Board of Education announced that Dr. Wayne N. Walters will serve as Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools. Dr. Walters assumed the top leadership post on August 1, 2022, following the 10-month period where he served as interim Superintendent.
Facilities Utilization Plan
Shifting the focus beyond mere facility arrangements, Superintendent Wayne N. Walters, EdD, alongside District leaders, presented a comprehensive vision for leveraging the District’s footprint to enhance the entire educational landscape in Pittsburgh. Shared at the Board’s April 3rd Education Committee Meeting, the proposed facilities utilization plan sets out to foster equity, excellence, and efficiency across the District. The proposal outlines strategic measures to optimize facility usage, aiming to enrich the learning environment while addressing financial inefficiencies within the District. Recognizing the pivotal role of community input, the plan emphasizes outreach and collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure effectiveness and buy-in.
The Why Behind the What
Providing Clarity Through Transparency
The Why Behind the What web series seeks to bring clarity through transparency by breaking down the whys behind the actions and decisions of District leaders. Through the web series, Dr. Wayne N. Walters shares the why behind the what to improve understanding, transparency and purposeful communications with students, staff, parents, families, and the community as part of the District’s efforts to expand stakeholder communication and partnerships.
Design Principles
Pittsburgh Public Schools is currently challenged to improve student achievement and experiences while eliminating persistent racial and disability disparities. In collaboration and approval with the Board of Directors, Superintendent Wayne N. Walters has identified five priority goals to inform a strategic planning process that will ultimately result in a five-year strategic plan.
Strategic Plan
Based on data and stakeholder input, Pittsburgh Public Schools will focus on four Strategic Themes, over the next five years, designed to enhance student outcomes and experiences. Each theme includes specific objectives and initiatives. These initiatives will be phased over three years to ensure sufficient staff capacity, thorough implementation planning, and ongoing monitoring. Year 1 initiatives will begin in the 2024-2025 school year. Our strategic themes recognize that student success extends beyond academic achievement, encompassing emotional, behavioral, mental, and physical health. It is our responsibility to acknowledge and support all these aspects of our students' well-being.
