CAPA Piano
Piano Department
The Piano Department offers a variety of classes which aim to develop students’ pianistic and musicianship skills, as well as to broaden their understanding of music theory and history, and collaborative skills. These courses include sight-reading, keyboard literature, jazz piano, and ensembles. Students also take classes in the instrumental or vocal department, taking courses in music theory and solfege.
Every CAPA pianist receives a private lesson, usually weekly. Within these lessons, students study scales, technique, and a variety of styles. A weekly performance class is offered to high school students to supplement and reinforce lesson material. Recitals are presented each semester, featuring all piano students, and emphasize the importance of public performance. Other performances are available for participation throughout the school year in the form of orchestra and choir concerts, small ensembles, musicals, interdepartmental collaborations, and outreach events. Students are evaluated at the end of each semester at a graded piano jury.
