Teens who spend time in Downtown Pittsburgh say they need a welcoming neighborhood, more safe spaces

Pittsburgh CAPA graduate accepted to world-renowned dance company
Garland, 20, joined Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts school (CAPA) in eighth grade and received classical training. Since then, he’s been involved in numerous companies, programs, and camps, the most notable of which is his recent admission to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He’s making the move during his junior year at University of Southern California's Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and the middle of Ailey’s season.

Surprise bicycle delivery made at Pittsburgh elementary school
PITTSBURGH — Kindergarten students at Pittsburgh Minadeo PreK-5 in Squirrel Hill started cruising in physical education class on Monday, thanks to a surprise delivery of 24 bicycles. Engineering company HDR and All Kids Bike provided the school with the bikes, helmets, and more, as part of an initiative that seeks to teach kids how to ride at school.

Pittsburgh Weil PreK-5 is a school on the move! Pittsburgh Weil PreK-5 is a neighborhood school located in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Pittsburgh Weil provides standards-based and data-driven instruction, and learning is designed to meet students' individual needs. We offer a safe and welcoming atmosphere where respect and kindness flourish. Our small size provides a great environment where every child and family is known by name. Your child will receive the individual attention he/she deserves from a committed and energetic staff. In addition, our Pittsburgh Weil families receive support from our many community partnerships.
At Weil, specific rituals and routines are followed throughout the school day. Academic safety nets, including: a 30 minute Reading Intervention period and Reading Horizons program. We emphasize developing good study skills and habits. In addition to a strong core academic program, students at Weil have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular programs, enrichment activities, sports, and a variety of school sponsored events and assemblies. Some of the activities our students have participated in include Everybody Wins Book Club, instrumental music, D.A.R.E., Dancing Classrooms, Carnegie Library BLAST, after-school tutoring, and team sports like basketball. student achievement.

PPS Early Childhood Education Programs provides early learning opportunities to approximately over 2,000 children a year from infancy through five-years of age throughout the City of Pittsburgh. The children and families served receive comprehensive services including education, nutrition, health, mental health, disabilities and social services. By meeting the needs of the “whole child” we ensure that all children are prepared for kindergarten entrance.All of our PPS Early Childhood classrooms operate for 6-hours a day. During that time all children are exposed to a research-based, high quality curriculum that is aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards and receive instruction individually, in small groups, and in whole group settings.
