Kidsburgh: STEM Coding Lab providing computer classes in schools around the region
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- When most of us were in school, we took science classes like biology and chemistry, but computer science may be even more important for today's kids. Yet nearly 90% of kindergarten through eighth grade students don't have access to computer science classes. KDKA-TV's Kristine Sorensen visited a local school where the nonprofit STEM Coding Lab is providing computer classes there and in schools around the region.

Slime the Teacher Event-Pittsburgh Phillips K-5
Pittsburgh Phillips K-5 had a slime the teacher event today to celebrate working hard to be respectful all month as part of their PBIS incentive. Third grade teacher Mrs. ElSabbagh was the brave staff member who was selected by students and families through a raffle at Back to School Night.

Superintendent Dr. Wayne N. Walters has been named the inaugural honoree of The Plant A Seed Experience. The experience supports the work of Plant A Seed Children’s Partnership Inc., which through its Working Supportive/Mentoring Curriculum supports youth with life skills that will guide them to better conflict resolution and decision-making - planting comprehensive skills for tomorrow’s generation today.

Pittsburgh Roosevelt PreK-5 is a neighborhood school located in Pittsburgh's Carrick community. At Pittsburgh Roosevelt, the focus is "Excellence for All." The instructional program is designed around the District's comprehensive curriculum, emphasizing the Pennsylvania learning standards in reading, math, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education. The Instructional Focus of the school is reading comprehension across all content areas. We are committed that all students will learn each day and in every classroom. The expectation at Pittsburgh Roosevelt is that all students can achieve. School policies, practices and curriculum are designed to sustain the academic rigor of the school and to ensure that all students are contributing members of the school community. Pittsburgh Roosevelt is a model of an exemplary school program that offers best practices and supports all students, regardless of ability, with the highest quality instruction and support in the least restrictive educational environment. At Pittsburgh Roosevelt PreK-5, students are encouraged to be a Roosevelt B.E.A.R.; students will always be safe, encourage others, demonstrate accountability for their own actions and words, and show respect.
At Pittsburgh Roosevelt, we offer two after school programs for students in grades one-five. The Elect Student Works Program provides academic and recreational activities Monday through Thursday, 3 hours per day, following school dismissal. This program is provided FREE to all eligible children. At Pittsburgh Roosevelt, we offer an extended day YMCA Program on site. It begins immediately at dismissal and runs until 6PM daily, Monday-Friday. This is a state licensed after-school program. Additionally, we participate in the Think-A-Thon; Stash the Trash Days, and the SECTUM contest each year.

PPS Early Childhood Education Programs provides early learning opportunities to approximately over 2,000 children a year from infancy through five-years of age throughout the City of Pittsburgh. The children and families served receive comprehensive services including education, nutrition, health, mental health, disabilities and social services. By meeting the needs of the “whole child” we ensure that all children are prepared for kindergarten entrance.All of our PPS Early Childhood classrooms operate for 6-hours a day. During that time all children are exposed to a research-based, high quality curriculum that is aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards and receive instruction individually, in small groups, and in whole group settings. Our children also have opportunities to receive specialized services in the classroom through our contracted providers or Early Intervention (as needed), to socialize with peers, and receive breakfast & lunch daily.To learn more about Early Childhood, visit www.pghschools.org/earlychildhood
