Sharise Nance’s ‘S.W.A.G. Awards’ puts local social workers in the spotlight
Initially, Nance, a Pittsburgh native, wanted to be a child psychologist. After being hands-on for quite some time, she realized that the problems were systemic, and decided that she needed to work on the system at-large. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
-
Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8 is a comprehensive neighborhood school located in and drawing on the North Side communities. Numerous cultural assets populate the North Side; many within walking distance are utilized through partnerships to enhance the education of our students. It is the schools mission to provide engaging student-centered instruction that yields proficient and advanced children. We believe that all children are capable of succeeding in school given the appropriate instructional program and support. The foundation of the Pittsburgh Manchester School is to provide a safe effective school, driven by research, data and standards with a focus on instruction, student engagement, an emphasis on evidence, high expectations, parental involvement, ongoing monitoring, recognition of student progress, and strong, visible instructional leadership.
Our program is enriched by a variety of strategies aimed at supporting the development of basic and advanced skills both during the school day and through after school activities. A thoughtfully designed mentoring program enhances the interactions between older and younger students so that all students benefit and grow from the relationships. In addition to the mentoring program, elementary students have the opportunity to participate in the In-School Scouting program. For the older students, an active student council provides students with a voice in activities. Additionally, Pittsburgh Manchester offers a variety of interscholastic and intramural sports including basketball, soccer, and a new cross country team. Current partnerships include a mentoring program focused on reading through Church Union, a garden renovation project with Sam's Club, a toy drive, and programs through The United Way and The United Methodist Church to ensure that our students and families are supported in all aspects. Family and community engagement is a priority with active volunteers that enhance the learning environment through their talents and dedication.

Manchester Early Childhood
PPS Early Childhood Education Programs provides early learning opportunities to approximately over 2,000 children a year from infancy through five-years of age throughout the City of Pittsburgh. The children and families served receive comprehensive services including education, nutrition, health, mental health, disabilities and social services. By meeting the needs of the “whole child” we ensure that all children are prepared for kindergarten entrance. All of our PPS Early Childhood classrooms operate for 6-hours a day. During that time all children are exposed to a research-based, high quality curriculum that is aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards and receive instruction individually, in small groups, and in whole group settings. Our children also have opportunities to receive specialized services in the classroom through our contracted providers or Early Intervention (as needed), to socialize with peers, and receive breakfast & lunch daily. To learn more about Early Childhood, visit www.pghschools.org/earlychildhood
