College fair with admissions on the spot set for Sept. 19
Board member at-large, Dr. Melvin Steals, and wife, Adrena, are responsible for bringing the fair to Pittsburgh. With support from Dr. Wayne Walters, the former principal of Barack Obama Academy and current PPS superintendent, Dr. Steals hosted the inaugural scholarship fair in the region in 2012. Dr. Walters continues to support what Dr. Steals describes as a pipeline for college and higher educational opportunities.

“Take A Child to School Day is really important for us because it encourages fathers and adult role models and figures to really come and be a part of bringing their children to school,” Superintendent Wayne Walters said Thursday. “All of it matters. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Pittsburgh Carrick High School is a comprehensive neighborhood school located in Pittsburgh's Carrick community. Our mission is to ensure that all graduates are "Promise-Ready" and prepared with a plan for school, work, or additional training. A dedicated faculty and staff include several National Board Certified Teachers and Evaluators. In addition to programs at the Advanced Placement (AP), gifted (CAS), scholars (PSP), Special Education (PSE), and standard academic levels, Carrick offers a variety of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students who complete the CTE programs in accordance with the Chapter 339 programming and time requirements may obtain the CTE certification.Pittsburgh Carrick High School offers a full range of interscholastic, intramural, and co-curricular clubs including varsity sports, school plays, marching band, steel drums, indoor guard, majorettes, percussion competition units, and community service projects. Students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of academic competitions such as the African American History Bowl. A strong, award-winning arts program is supported by partnerships with Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. Pittsburgh Carrick's Marching Band has been named the "Best City Band" for the Labor Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Veteran's Day Parades.

Board Representative:
Jamie Piotrowski
About Ms. Piotrowski:
Pittsburgh native, Jamie Piotrowski, has worked in equitable community planning, and development initiatives in Pittsburgh, and towns, cities, and boroughs throughout the United States. She is currently employed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh as a Program Analyst. She previously served as a caseworker for several Pittsburgh based non-profit organizations before returning to graduate school.
Jamie is a licensed Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, holds a B.A. in Sociology-Family Studies from Waynesburg University, a Master's Degree in International Development (Governance and International Public Management), and a Master's in Social Work (Community Organizing), both from the University of Pittsburgh. During her time at Pitt, Jamie completed the Bridging the Gaps program to promote public health initiatives in underserved neighborhoods, and studied abroad in Havana, Cuba, and Kathmandu, Nepal.
Ms. Piotrowski resides in the Carrick neighborhood with her husband, Geoffrey, and their daughter.
