Penguins' Hunt Armory is lowering the bar — and cost — of youth hockey. Now, that trend is going national.
The afternoon of Feb. 18 turned into a late night for a few members of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. In a pre-game ceremony, Jaromir Jagr’s jersey was hoisted to the rafters of PPG Paints Arena, becoming more retired than the now-52-year-old man who wore it. But after all of the public celebrations, there was a private one.

Pittsburgh Brookline PreK-8 has served as a neighborhood learning institution for
more than 113 years. The school is situated near one of the highest points in the City of
Pittsburgh is in the middle of a thriving business district and a diverse community. Its tan brick and stately architectural façade are admired and respected throughout the community.
Students of Pittsburgh Brookline PreK-8 are exposed to a kind and compassionate school community where they are encouraged and supported by staff. The traditional travertine hallways funnel students into large and lively classrooms where staff have created rich learning environments. Grades K-5 classrooms are in the main building, while middle school grades attend classes adjacent to the school in air-conditioned demountable classrooms. Middle level students travel inside the main building to attend Related Arts classes, eat breakfast and lunch, and participate in school-wide activities. All students follow a traditional eight-period 45-minute bell schedule.
We are proud of our diverse learning environment highlighted by three regional
Autistic Support classrooms which provide inclusive teaching and learning
environment. Learning Support teachers act as a resource for other teachers by
Providing core curriculum supports based upon individual student data.
Additionally, our veteran expert teaching staff deliver a traditional curriculum,
supported by differentiated instruction, social and emotional lessons, and positive
behavior interventions and supports. All students receive a computer to use in each
class promoting 21st Century skills and cognitive tutor software applications.
The students at Brookline PreK-8 are encouraged by a wonderfully supportive staff, as well as community partners that provide before and after school daycare, programming and resources that address needs, mentoring and engagement, and more. Staff members participate in the success of students through after-school tutoring, student clubs, and middle school sports. An active and supportive Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides students with enhanced opportunities and builds community among all stakeholders. The staff of Pittsburgh Brookline PreK-8 is proud to be recognized by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as one of America’s healthiest schools.

PPS Early Childhood Education Programs provides early learning opportunities to approximately over 2,000 children a year from infancy through five-years of age throughout the City of Pittsburgh. The children and families served receive comprehensive services including education, nutrition, health, mental health, disabilities and social services. By meeting the needs of the “whole child” we ensure that all children are prepared for kindergarten entrance.All of our PPS Early Childhood classrooms operate for 6-hours a day. During that time all children are exposed to a research-based, high quality curriculum that is aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards and receive instruction individually, in small groups, and in whole group settings. About Mr. Gallagher:
William (Bill) Gallagher is no stranger to the Pittsburgh Public Schools. A long-time educator, Mr. Gallagher served 27 years as a teacher with the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Mr. Gallagher also brings 31 years of experience as a football coach in the District as well as for Avonworth, Seton LaSalle, South Fayette, and Washington & Jefferson College. Mr. Gallagher is a lifelong resident of the City of Pittsburgh and still resides in the same Brookline home where he raised his four children, three of which are Pittsburgh Public Schools graduates. Mr. Gallagher holds a B.A.s in Political Science and Education both from Washington and Jefferson College and a Pennsylvania Special Education Certification from Duquesne University.
