    INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY

  • Students in ESL Classroom at desk English Learners (ELs) will have simultaneous access to rich academic content vocabulary and English language development opportunities. The instructional goals are to increase both language proficiency and academic content knowledge in light of WIDA standards and the Pennsylvania English Language Proficiency Standards. In addition, students' languages and cultures are to be valued and considered during instruction.

International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL)
Featuring one of the largest collections of free books for children, the website has made it so that anyone can access their books, even without registering. Users can search for books according to language, age level and genre. You can sign up for an account where you can bookmark books and save your favorites for later reading.

Literacy Center
Featuring over 150 million online games and printable activities for preschool children, the resources on this website aim to encourage playful learning for children. Resources include print writing practice and games to practice letters on the keyboard. In Spanish, German, and French as well.

Reading is Fundamental
Reading Is Fundamental is an exceptional ELL website focusing on reading. RIF is part of a literacy movement in which literacy for all children is paramount. Their focus and aim is for every child to enjoy, benefit and implement reading into their everyday lives. This website is mostly geared toward students from preschool to 2nd or 3rd grade.

NIH Kids' Pages
This ELL website was established by the National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIH) in an effort to combine learning with informative information about health, ecology, the environment, science and other important issues. The material is perfect for students from grades 5 to 8.

Using English (UE)
Using English (UE) is geared toward all levels and ages and offers relevant information that will benefit you and your students. UE is an easy-to-navigate site with several categories for teachers and students alike. It offers tests, quizzes, forums, English references, articles, tools and extensive material you can utilize when crafting informative and engaging lesson plans.

New York Public Library
Free ESOL Websites listed by New York Public Library: These general ESOL websites offer many types of activities (grammar, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, etc.) for language learners of all levels.

Dave's ESL Cafe
Student support includes Help Center, Grammar Lessons, Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, Pronunciation Power, Quizzes, Slang, and Student Forums. Designed for secondary students and adults.
