Literacy represents the lifelong, intellectual process of gaining meaning from a critical interpretation of the written or printed text. The key to literacy is reading development, a progression of skills that begins with the ability to understand spoken words and decode written words, and culminates in the deep understanding of text.
Pittsburgh Public Schools is committed to preparing all students to be college and career ready as recommended by the Common Core State Standards. The District has made a crucial decision to develop and implement in each classroom a curriculum that provides each student the same high caliber, rigorous learning experiences. We believe that every student can achieve at high levels when provided an effective teacher that engages them in well-designed and well-taught curriculum.
Pittsburgh Public Schools Literacy Program provides all students with a high quality, research validated curriculum. The Literacy instructional pathways provide opportunities for all students to develop as apprentices to and in an academic discipline. Detailed culturally responsive instructional pathways systemically build on the necessary content knowledge and the habits of thought critical to the study of the literacy discipline. The rigorous standards-driven curriculum rewards students for applying effort and provides them with clear expectations.
